The history of Grain Insurance & Guarantee dates back to August 13, 1920. A group of Winnipeg based grain companies, dissatisfied with the premiums being charged for fire insurance on their prairie grain elevators, decided to charter their own insurance company. The move was designed to pressure their underwriters to reduce fire premiums. It didn’t work, but the die was cast, and Grain Insurance & Guarantee was born.
For many years the focus of the company was to insure only shareholders properties. By the mid 1930s over 40 grain companies were shareholders and used the facilities of Grain Insurance & Guarantee to insure their grain handling properties. One of the primary focuses of Grain Insurance & Guarantee was to loss control our book of business and to that end, Affiliated Inspection Bureau was formed. This continues to be a major focus today, as many of the risks we insure receive a comprehensive loss control report.
By combining sound underwriting principles with an attention to loss control, Grain Insurance & Guarantee has achieved an enviable record of profitability since its founding in 1920.
Grain Insurance & Guarantee began accepting business from brokers in the early ’70s which broadened the company’s distribution throughout Canada. Grain Insurance & Guarantee was soon known as a market for Special Events, Amusement Parks and Waterslide Parks across Canada. Building on this success, Grain Insurance & Guarantee developed packages for Churches, Opticians/Optometrists, Hairdressers, Funeral Directors and Seed Cleaning Plants. Over the years, Grain Insurance & Guarantee has developed a reputation as an innovative insurer by developing specialized insurance programs for the constantly changing needs of Canadian business.
In addition to developing and underwriting package policies, the largest segment of the company’s business now comes from standard property and casualty business.
Grain Insurance & Guarantee now operates from coast to coast in Canada, in all 10 Provinces and Territories.
